Though in persona 5 there are a few cameos of persona 4 characters.All voice lines refer to them as he. Only exception is P3P when they made a specific girl MC route. So no the p4 and p5 are guys.All the games are standalone, and have no overlap with each other. There's small easter eggs here and there, but that's about it. You're free to play them in any order you want. Personally, Reload is an amazing starting point and is the definitive Persona experience available right now.

As an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a great combination of JRPG and visual novel. I think the ESRB of M (17+) is appropriate because of specific things that happen in the game, though most of the game is probably closer to a Teen rating.
