Das Gebiet war von 1972 bis 1983 und erneut von 2005 bis 2011 eine autonome Region innerhalb des Sudans. Am 9. Juli 2011 erlangte der Südsudan die Unabhängigkeit vom Sudan. Der Südsudan ist eines der ärmsten Länder der Welt.
